Local backup target failed for a long time before the cause was found

The local backup target had been failing for a very long time. The failures were repeatedly attributed to the backup software and the transfer itself.

The cause was the drive: it reports uncorrectable sectors. A replacement has been ordered and the checks that would have surfaced this earlier are now documented.
